Across the country in 5 days...

Saturday, August 20, 2011

I'm finally blogging again! Turns out that driving across the country and then unpacking/moving into a new house can be quite time consuming. We're not completely settled yet but as soon as we are we'll take pictures of the place. Now for pictures:

These are pictures of the big "projects" Andrew did as my dad's farm hand with help from my cousin, Larry. They built this room (framing, insulation, carpeting, the whole thing) inside the barn for my dad's food storage. I should also mention that this looks like a lot of food storage... This isn't even the HALF of it. My dad is prepared for the apocalypse...

Andrew also built this gate all by himself!

Ok. Now for pictures of our drive. My car started to have some real problems on the road so we pulled over in some city in Nebraska or Iowa (I don't remember) and since it was Sunday, nothing was open except for an auto parts store. We figured out that it was a problem with the spark plugs. While my dad and Andrew were fidgeting around trying to figure out what spark plugs were, these two "angels" as my dad calls them, came by and helped us first locate the spark plugs and told us how to replace them. (Moral of the story: Our "angels" were featured in wife beaters and tattoos so when you're in a pickle, keep an open mind!) :)

After the car was running smoothly, we were on the road again...

We made a stop in Nauvoo (of course) and went to the records office to find the location of the land my ancestors lived on! These are some pictures of that land!

We then visited the temple in all its glowing glory.

Then we went and toured some of the houses in Nauvoo...

...and ended our sightseeing for the day by walking the Trail of Hope.

After walking down the trail, we sat down and looked at the Mississippi river and did some modeling (naturally).

The next morning we got up early to visit Carthage jail. (FYI, for those that aren't LDS, Nauvoo and Carthage jail are historical and sacred sights to the church).

This is the window...

Bullet hole in the door...

Our last visit was on of Andrew's houses from his childhood in Reynoldsburg, Ohio.

It sure was a fantastic trip. After we made it to our place, Andrew's parents came and helped us move in! We absolutely love it here! More pictures to come!

Farewell, duckies!

Tuesday, August 2, 2011

Please forgive me for not posting for a while. I gave the duckies away today so I thought I would post a "goodbye." Before we dropped them off at their new home, we spent some time with them.

Their new owner's name is "Cindy" and she writes children's books; her and her husband run a farm on the side. The ducks are enclosed on a picturesque piece of land along with 2 geese, 2 piglets, and 16 bunnies with plenty of shade and water. There are also 2 guard dogs that keep the foxes away. They also have goats, and around 20 chickens in a a few nearby pens. It's duck heaven! I have no doubt that they will be happy there. Cindy also told us that she will email me with updates on how they are doing, and since they only live 7 minutes away from my dad's house, we can come visit them anytime we are in town. I can't imagine a better situation.

This experience was awesome. I finally got to do something I have wanted to do since I was a little one. I definitely got my "duck fix." So long, Napoleon and Marie! Enjoy your new home!
